The Call to Action: Faith Communities at a Crossroads
Across the country, something is happening. Amidst the cacophony of insanity this something is subtle, yet powerful: an increase in attendance in faith-based communities. While what we are seeing may not be a weekly surge – yet, – it is unmistakable—a growing number of people, from liberal to progressive, and even within more traditional faith settings, are seeking refuge in communities of faith.
Some see this trend as an invitation—a call to listen, with curiosity, to hear, to learn and to evolve alongside these people who are seeking refuge, support and inspiration in these communities of faith. Indeed, a profound responsibility lies ahead: “These seekers are our future.” This is where the challenge lies, and where communities of faith will either rise to the occasion or fall short. The question is: What are we doing to help seekers find a home among us?
In a nation reeling from unprecedented assaults on longstanding laws, values, and traditions, people are looking for something deeper—something real. They’re searching for belonging. They’re seeking a sense of purpose, empowerment, and clarity in the midst of the chaos. People are craving the very values that have defined communities of faith for generations: compassion, acceptance, justice, and equity.
The aftermath of the 2024 election, combined with the daily reports of loss, devastation, and social upheaval, has created a perfect storm of uncertainty. It’s reminiscent of past crises—the aftermath of 9/11, the murder of George Floyd, the tragedy of Sandy Hook—and yet, this feels different. The call for support, for groundedness, for community, is louder than ever. And once again, many are looking to faith communities to provide the answers, the solace, and yes, the resistance against forces that seem to threaten the very soul of the nation.
This is where we find ourselves at a crossroads. The world is changing—rapidly—and so too must we. The question is not whether people are showing up, but how we meet them when they do. Are we a community that reflects the values they seek? Are we open to embracing new voices, perspectives, and ways of being that challenge our comfort zones? Or will we cling to outdated traditions and norms that no longer resonate with the needs of a world in crisis?
This is a time for reflection, for action, and, most importantly, for courage. Courage to listen to the voices of those seeking solace. Courage to question how we’ve been doing things and whether it’s still enough. Courage to embody the values we preach, not just in words, but in deeds.
The challenge is clear: if we are to continue to be a beacon of hope, a sanctuary for those seeking a better way forward, we must evolve. We must rise to meet the moment with open hearts, with a willingness to grow, and with the humility to recognize that our future lies in the hands of those who will come after us.
So, the question remains: What are we doing to help seekers find a home among us? The answer lies not in maintaining the past, but in creating a future where everyone has a place—where compassion, justice, and equity are not just ideals, but lived realities. It’s time to listen, to learn, and to grow. The future is knocking. Are we ready to answer?
At Potentials, we have been doing this work – helping communities of faith, businesses and corporations all over the country take a critical look at what it will take for them to rise to this occasion, becoming a stronger, more principled and desirable place towards which people can gravitate, finding inspirations, support, and a community of like-minded people.
